Huawei phones that are kernel compatibe to Ascend G600

Discussion specific to Huawei Ascend G600 / Honor+ (U8950-1, U8950-51, U8950N-1, U8950D, C8950D, T8950)

Huawei phones that are kernel compatibe to Ascend G600

Postby Dopi » Mon Jan 21, 2013 10:16 am

While browsing through the newly released kernel source for Huawei's Ascend G510 I found that this kernel is actually intended to work for the following Huawei models, too. My primary interest would be using it for Jelly Bean on the U8950D ( Ascend G600 / Honor+ ) but is should also work for below devices.

  • C8812P
  • C8813D
  • U8815 (Ascend G300)
  • C8825D (Ascend G330C)
  • U8825 (Ascend G330)
  • U8825D (Ascend G330D)
  • C8833D (Y300?)
  • U8833 (Y300)
  • U8833D (Y300D)
  • C8950D (Ascend G600)
  • U8950 (Ascend G600)
  • U8950D (Ascend G600)
  • C8951 (Ascend G510)
  • U8951 (Ascend G510)
  • U8951D (Ascend G510F)
  • H881C

It sounds to me that this sould make a good base for creating custom ROMs. Happy hacking!

Cheers,
Dopi

EDIT 2013-03-20
- added C8813D

Hello, I'm also interested in developing a working Jelly Bean ROM for the Honor+ series of smartphones. Could you perhaps enlighten me about your progress so far and perhaps post a link to the kernel source of the G510?

Thanks!

Hi shadeMe,

good to see that you are also interested in building a custom ROM for the Honor+ series. Are you using a single or a dial-SIM version of the phone?

I have a kernel repository on github - the most recent branch is here https://github.com/Dopi/HuaweiAscendG600_kernel/tree/3.4.0_U8950D_experimental. This is more or less unmodified version of the Huawei G510 3.4.0 kernel source. I did not do much with this since some time. If you are looking for a more recent repository I would suggest to look at the kernel source for Huawei U8815 (here) - based on my assumptions it should also work for the U8950 / G600.

Currently I try to used a more simple way to get Jelly Bean for the G600 by using the binaries from the G510 Jelly Bean release ( here ). There is a simple script to unpack the UPDATE.APP and I already unpacked the root FS and the kernel image. I just need to put it back together and test it ... This is clearly not my preferred method but as I need the dual-SIM system there are only little other choices as sources for dual-SIM Android apps are scarce.

Cheers,
Dopi

I've got the single SIM, global/European model, U8950-1. Thanks for the links to the repos - I'll take a look at the code.

Single SIM makes life a little easier, so good luck with your modifications. I am very interested to see what you can do based on these sources.

Thanks! I'm very much a neophyte when it comes to anything kernel/*nix related stuff so I'm probably off to a slow start. In any event, I shall keep you updated on my progress. Presently, I'm trying to get the build environment set up on Ubuntu 12.10.

In case you have any problems compiling or setting up the build environment you are very welcome to post your questions here :)

Thanks - That would be swell :) I've been using this guide to set up the environ. I'm having trouble getting the repo to sync though - For some reason, the tool (or the source server) is unwilling to serve the code at speeds greater than 1KB/s! I can't imagine downloading the entire 8 odd gigs of the stuff before I kick the bucket :P

Can you think of any reason as to why this is happening? Perhaps I haven't configured something correctly. I'm running the OS in a VM by the way.

Hi shadeMe,

I also sometimes have a problem with the downloading time. It seems to be quite common. I would suggest to try it again at another time of day or another day of the week. Usually github is already one of the best servers but it can still last take half a day or so ...
