asking samsung for help in development

Postby denteo » Thu Jun 09, 2011 4:23 pm

Just wondering if we could also request Samsung for help in the conversion of their old Samsung Jet to an android device. They have been so kind to give Cyanogen, phones to play around and make custom roms, which comes as a surprise to everyone. They have been very friendly to the android community lately and promising not to lock their phones.

why wouldn't they be nice? their money is already in when you buy the phone, and many custom roms could make a phone more attractive (which leads to more people buying the phone...)

I agree with Gotomtom95.
We have nothing to loose by asking. The good question is who should we asking to?

There is no really phone with almost the same specs.
And i'm sure Samsung could find a nice market with 3.2 / 3.5 screen size phones. (with 480*800 screen resolution Of course)
I was so disappointed whith the Samsung Ace...

However, i just read that the HTC Desire can't receive Android 2.3 (at least not from official update)
Maybe Samsung met the same limitations with Froyo?

To conclude, I think it's good if we can have an unofficial contact.
Even, if we don't get a fully functionnal rom, we can hope a little help here and there, for a specific matter.

Maybe guys from Samfirmware can get us a contact ?

Cheers,

If you guys do this they would likely say but there is the s3c6410 2.6.24 kernel with all its bugs. It will take too long to fix this.

So if you can ask for at least a 2.6.31 or above kernel as the s3cfb_ams310fn07 screen driver a few other things will need complete re-write to work from scratch and we don't have the skill or time to completely do it as fast and as good as Samsung can. Fixing it from there is then easier.

LOL,
I just got the messages...
I was thinking of subscribing to the forum of Samfirmware, and open a thread asking them a contact, or help.

The point is, i think Someone from the DevTeam here is a better contact because he'll know better what to ask, and understand the answer!

i'll try to write a draft, probably tomorrow, and post it here.

Cheers,
Louis

Edit:
Not today finally...

Sorry guys !

I'm on holiday, and was away from the net for few days !! (Sun and waves were sooo good ! )

I think i'll make it simple: Ask them to come to a dedicated thread (not this one), that would be a summary of the project status:
-What we achieve.
-What we need : Ressources (like modules, Zimage file, init.rc file) and direction. (what is the most appropriate kernel?)

My English isn't that good, and i'm not a part of the DevTeam... I'm not even home and my jet i flashed came back clean from repair (the jack was broken, but still, they flashed the phone and the bootloader. Warranty worked)

So i think we should create a thread that i could point to, in the message.
(on samfirmware.com ? with a jetdroid user name?)

The message would be:

Hello,
We are users of the GT-S8000 which is a very good phone.
A team is trying to port Android to this phone, and we need a little help to make some progress.
Our team website is http://www.jetdroid.org .
So far, we managed to modify the bootloader to root it to the SDCard, and run android 2.2 (2.1? 2.3?)
However, a lot of stuff is not working, and progress are very slow.

A little help from a samsung engineer, would be very nice.

Thanks for your help,
kind regards,
The JetDroid team ...

it's good message!
but it's maybe better if you tell them which we need to get work critically!
Example: sound is critical right now to get work! zImage with right audio code text is critical! + right audio files is critical!
then other which are not so critical: working usb + battery with 1% level (100%, 99%, 98%, ###%

Then maybe them can help and I don't believe that Samsung can help because usually nobody don't want help unofficial porting!

but I hope them can help us!

Sounds good, just keep in mind that samsung kernels that has been released is a quick patch so some stuff might work but it is not optimal code, but that would be okay as we can do the fine tuning.

What would be great is is they could take Tom3Q github 2.6.38 kernel and make it work for the S8000 or at least the needed files for the S8000 and we can merge the rest.

Needed files / drivers for 2.6.32+ kernels:
Mach files for S8000 for 2.6.32 or higher kernel, audio Max9880, fsa89* power management, baseband is a big problem, check this numbers with kernel.log numbers, typing in windows now so numbers could be wrong.
