There is many websites explaining the unlock procedure for the S8000 / other Samsung phones.
Youtube has video's as well.

The unlock if only for network is usually free by doing a factory reset / hard reset.
I have used this below on 5 samsung phones and always works if only network locked, not sure if any other locks is on.
Use at your own risk. You have 10 times to unlock then permanent locked to TMN.

Inside normal samsung phone, after you backup all you mp3's / doc's / pics ect.
Then reset phone to default, settings -> reset to default = yes.
Then use this below.

http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f200/all-samsung-hard-reset-codes-588846/
Code: Select all
All Samsung Hard Reset Codes
In those steps:

1.      *2767*3855#
2.      *7465625*638*00000000*00000000#
3.      #7465625*638*00000000#

Now your phone is unlock forever Permanent

Once finished you can then flash new firmware.

Samsung LBS / Route 66 is still free and you can use the S8000 setup guide from route66 to install it. maps are free but voices or something else = pay.

http://www.66.com/samsung/index.php?cid=US&act=1

Go left to S8000 and follow the guide.

You forgot to mension that navigation itself isn't free. So you cant see your location in the maps etc.
