ZTE launches Tegra 3 phone for below $160

ZTE is surely one of the heavyweights of the Chinese mobile business. Thus it is a bit of a surprise that one of the major players fishes in the very low price region. However, ZTE teamed up with Beidu (well-known for the “Little Pepper” 699 RMB dual-core) in order to surprise us with the release of a sub 1000 RMB ($160) quad-core smartphone. This earns ZTE the 1st rank in the competition for the lowest priced quad-core smartphone. If you are lucky enough to get hold of one of these devices you can expect a lot of power for the little money. The nickname “Little Whirlwind” promises everything but a slow mover – here is the spec:

The low display resolution is clearly a downer but the rest of the spec is state of the art. Especially the full sensor support including compass and gyroscope is a welcome addition. However one word of warning for those who would like to use this phone outside of China: As it only supports TD-SCDMA 3G networks there is nothing but 2G network coverage for the rest of the world. Thus his little thunderstorm will roar only for Chinese customers. If you are among these you can register for pre-order now. On November 11th 100000 phones will be made available for purchase at 999 RMB ($159) and be shipped out on November 15th.
